Each year, the Met Gala proves why it remains fashion’s most theatrical and thought-provoking night—and 2025 was no exception. From a theme rooted in cultural history to jaw-dropping couture that redefines red carpet elegance, this year’s gala delivered style with substance.

Origins of the Met Gala

But before we go into it, let's look at how it all started. The Met Gala was born in 1948, the brainchild of Eleanor Lambert—an iconic fashion publicist also known for founding the CFDA and the International Best Dressed List. Originally conceived as a fundraising dinner to benefit the newly established Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the event began as a quiet society affair.

It wasn’t until 1995, under the watchful eye of Anna Wintour, that the Met Gala began its transformation into the fashion event we know today. Held every first Monday in May, the gala coincides with the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual spring exhibition, each themed to inspire avant-garde interpretations from designers and celebrities alike.

Met Gala 2025 Theme: “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”

This year’s exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” celebrates the cultural legacy of tailoring in Black fashion. Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s groundbreaking book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the show is divided into 12 thematic pillars—from Distinction to Cool—highlighting the historical and aesthetic impact of Black dandyism.

The 2025 dress code, “Tailored for You,” encouraged guests to reimagine suiting and menswear through a personal and artistic lens—resulting in an eclectic array of interpretations that honour both tradition and transformation.

A Night Where Fashion Meets Identity

The Met Gala 2025 wasn’t just a celebration of tailoring—it was a celebration of cultural pride, individuality, and the legacy of craftsmanship in Black fashion. Whether channeling icons or making new statements, the stars delivered a night to remember with some clearly missing the mark, but after all, it's all so subjective.

It is reported that this year's Met has raised a record braking 31 million dollars in aid of the museum.
